Candid, to-the-point information from the industry’s top professionals and best talent.
The Power of Frameworks
Building a site from scratch can be hard. Don't reinvent the wheel.
Building a site from scratch is hard. Leveraging the power of a framework can help you build fully featured sites without having to recreate the wheel each time. This allows you to focus on the development of features that make your site unique while keeping your development costs down and your clients happy.
In this session, we briefly explore several popular frameworks of different types, including Ruby on Rails, Mambo, and Prototype. We will discuss the advantages of using off-the-shelf solutions such as these, and contrast them with the development of a proprietary framework, using an actual proprietary framework as an example. By the end of the session, you should have a better understanding of the types of frameworks that are available to you and how they might help you on your next project.
The session will last an hour and will be aimed at independent developers, technical leads, and project managers for teams of all sizes. We will go into some technical detail, though the discussion will be more topical than technical. We will introduce the topic and state the thesis that frameworks are a powerful way to build fully featured sites without having to recreate the wheel every time.
We’ll introduce the audience to several popular frameworks and talk about the advantages and disadvantages of each. We’ll then contrast this to the decision we made at Stringer Sites to develop our own framework called DST. We’ll introduce the audience to the framework to provide context to the discussion, and we’ll go into detail about the advantages and disadvantages of rolling our own solution.
The goal of the session is not to sell the audience on any one particular framework or technology, but rather to expose them to the tools available to them so they can evaluate whether using a framework for their next big project is right for them.
